Deeper Connection to the Directions – an in-depth course

The course Deeper Connection to the Directions builds on the popular course Deeper Connection to the Elements, which has been fully booked and had waiting lists. The last time we were in Trondheim, this course filled up in record time.

This in-depth course takes you a step further still – into an understanding of the seven sacred directions as they are expressed in both Norse and Sámi shamanism.

The seven directions – East, South, West, North, the Creative Force, Mother Earth and the Heart – form a living medicine wheel that holds every movement in life.

Through them we find balance between body, mind and spirit, and learn to stand steady in our own centre – in the heart, where all the directions meet.

The course moves between theory, drum journeys, song, sharing and small ceremonies.

Each direction is explored through mythology, symbolism and personal experience, and is accompanied by a simple song for that direction, which helps us anchor the experience in the body.

The course has two aims:

– to convey the spiritual and mythological meaning of the directions as they appear in Norse and Sámi shamanism

– to give participants their own experience of the directions as living forces and as balancing principles in life

Participants can choose whether to follow the Sámi or the Norse model through the course. The two traditions mirror each other in form and structure, but express different cultural and mythological roots.

Along the way you get the chance to go deeper into your own meeting with the winds, the light, the darkness and the stillness of the heart.

The course is led within a safe framework, with time for sharing, reflection and integration.

We recommend bringing a drum and an open mind. If you do not have a drum, we have a few loan drums to share out.

Previous participants have given very good feedback on the course Deeper Connection to the Elements – you can read some of it here:

The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many described the course as "a powerful spiritual experience that can bring you closer to your own core" and "a fantastic course with fantastic drum journeys". Several highlighted how safely and inclusively the course leader held the space, and how much it meant to be able to lean back and let themselves be guided into magical worlds.

One participant summed it up:

"If you really want to work in depth, this course is perfect! All you have to do is lean back, receive and let yourself be guided into magical worlds! The understanding you gain serves you in so many ways in life! I could do this course many, many times over! The course leader was so skilled and held space for everything and everyone. It felt safe and good all the way through. Very grateful."

About the course leaders

Kyrre Gram Franck

Image 1 from Deeper Connection to the Directions in Trondheim

Kyrre Franck is the founder of the Shamanic Association of Norway, an organisation dedicated to promoting and preserving shamanic traditions and practices in the modern age. With more than 30 years of experience, Kyrre has been a central figure in the Norwegian shamanic community, known for his commitment to reviving ancient shamanic traditions and adapting them to today's society.

Kyrre Franck has had a deep connection to nature and to spiritual practice from a young age. Growing up in a family that valued nature and had an open attitude to spiritual questions, he developed an early interest in shamanism and the old nature religions. On his mother's side, Franck has a Northern Sámi background, which has strongly shaped his relationship with shamanic traditions and nature-based spirituality. Sámi culture, known for its deep respect for nature and its shamanic practices, has formed Franck's spiritual journey.

Franck's vision for the Shamanic Association of Norway is to preserve and carry on shamanic traditions in a way that is relevant to people today. He places great emphasis on respecting and learning from the original shamanic cultures, while encouraging a personal approach in which each individual finds their own spiritual path. The association also works actively with environmental issues and sustainability, and sees the protection of nature as an important part of its spiritual practice.

Kyrre Franck is known for his down-to-earth and inclusive approach. He sees shamanism as a way of life that fosters balance, harmony and respect for all living beings. Through his work he strives to help others find their connection to nature and to their own inner sources of wisdom and strength. This is one of the few chances to take a course with Kyrre, as he does not usually teach on external courses.

Gunnar Steinholm

Gunnar Steinholm is an experienced ceremony leader trained by the Shamanic Association of Norway, where he will now be leading an introductory course in shamanism. With a background in the armed forces and in teaching, he brings valuable experience and insight to his courses.

As well as leading courses, Gunnar is known for making shaman drums, which are an important part of shamanic practice. His work with healing and his Sámi roots give him a deep understanding of the traditional practices that shamanism rests on.

Gunnar is also trained as a hypnotherapist and has foundation-level studies in psychology, which further enriches his approach to shamanic work. His combination of practical experience and theoretical knowledge makes him an inspiring leader for the participants on the course.

Feel free to bring your own drum and a willingness to listen – both inwards and outwards.
