The vision quest has taken many forms over the years, from survival tests to pilgrimages and inner searching. A vision quest can put you in touch with yourself and the spirit world. Everyone can benefit from such a search. You will need to decide certain things before a vision quest. Where will you go, when will you go, and how long will you be away? Where you go is important. A personal power place is the best. It should also be a place where you will not be disturbed. How long you stay away matters less, as long as it is long enough. Sometimes an afternoon is enough; sometimes you need days. Ask your guide how long you need if you are unsure. It is important that you let someone know where you are going and how long you will be away. Questions on a vision quest are usually about big problems or about the great questions of life.

Historically, the shamans fasted before and during a quest, both to cleanse themselves and as a sacrifice to show that they took it seriously. Hard fasting can be harmful to the body. Instead, I suggest that you eat less than normal in the days before the ceremony. During the quest itself you should try not to eat anything. But drink water during the quest itself. If you must, you can also drink a little fruit juice. DO NOT TRY TO GO WITHOUT WATER. Make sure you bring enough water for the entire stay. If you have particular illnesses, take them into account. Bring as little as possible on a vision quest. Enough warm clothing, a blanket, a drum, and smudge. Do not bring things that distract you, such as books and the like.
When you arrive at your place, make yourself a medicine wheel and sit in the spirit door. Close your eyes and introduce yourself and greet the elements and the surroundings around you. Take the time you need. Travel, dance, sing, listen and learn. If you wish, you can try to stay awake throughout the whole ceremony. On long ceremonies you may sleep a few hours, but try to sleep as little as possible. Watch for signs from the spirits. They are usually small; the spirits do not need to use a sledgehammer 😉 A bird's cry or a visit from an animal can have great significance and meaning in a vision quest. Do not worry if you become restless or hungry; you probably will, and it will trouble you. That is part of the learning. Do not give up; the experience will be stronger if you manage it.
When it is time to leave, put the area in exactly the same state as it was before you came. Clean up litter left by others. Remember to thank the spirits and your guides before you leave.
Your answers do not have to be clear; it can take a long time before you gain clarity. Remember that you will learn what you need to know when you need it. Feel free to share what you experience with people who do not judge you, but you do not have to.
