Shamanic perspectives on community, circle structures, and finding your place

Loneliness is a feeling many people know in our modern age. Despite digital networks and large cities, it can feel as though the distance between people only grows. For some, loneliness becomes a heavy burden, a sense of standing outside the community. Shamanism, with its ancient roots, offers a different view of both loneliness and belonging, a view that encompasses both the visible and the invisible community.

Community in a circle

In shamanic tradition, the circle is a fundamental symbol. It represents wholeness, equality, and belonging. When people gather in a circle, whether around a fire, in a drum journey, or in conversation, no one sits higher or lower than anyone else. Everyone has their place, and everyone's voice matters. The circle makes room to be seen, heard, and acknowledged, regardless of background, age, faith, or life situation.

Taking part in a circle, physically or symbolically, can be a powerful counterweight to loneliness. Here we can share our stories, listen to others' experiences, and discover that we are not alone in our challenges. The community in the circle is built on respect, trust, and openness, values that provide fertile ground for genuine belonging.

Finding your place when you feel left out

Many people go through periods in life when they feel left out, whether in the family, at the workplace, or in society. Shamanism reminds us that belonging is not always about fitting into others' expectations, but about finding your own place, your own footing, in the world.

Through shamanic practices such as drum journeying, meditation, and contact with nature, we can explore who we are, what we dream of, and what gifts we have to share. We can seek guidance from our power animals, ancestors, and spirits, who are always present and support us on our path. These helpers remind us that we are never entirely alone, even when human community feels far away.

The invisible communities

In shamanism, community is not limited to the physical. Our power animals, ancestors, and spirits are part of our extended community. They accompany us through life, giving us strength, counsel, and protection. When we feel lonely, we can turn inward and seek contact with these helpers. Perhaps through a drum journey, a quiet moment in nature, or by lighting a candle for a forefather or foremother.

Acknowledging this invisible support can give a deep sense of belonging and security. We are woven into a larger network of life, both visible and invisible, and we carry with us wisdom and love from the generations before us.

Paths out of loneliness

Shamanism encourages us to seek community, both among people and in nature. It might be taking part in a drum circle, going for a walk in the forest, or simply sitting still and listening to the wind. By opening ourselves to both human and spiritual community, we can find the strength to stand in our own power while also feeling connected to all of life.

Loneliness is part of being human, but we do not have to bear it alone. In the circle, in nature, and in contact with our spiritual helpers, there is always a place where we belong.
