Sjamanistisk Forbund has made it possible for everyone to experience the power of the drum journey, no matter where you are. Here you will find a whole collection of free, non-guided drum journeys. This is the association's gift to everyone who wishes to explore shamanic practice, their own spirituality, or simply wants deep relaxation and calm.
The drum journeys are recorded with binaural sound technology, which provides an especially effective experience - particularly if you use headphones. This allows you to immerse yourself in the rhythms and let the sound envelop you, so that you can more easily enter a meditative or trance-like state.
Norse drumjourneys by Shamanic association of Norway
What is a drum journey?
A drum journey is an ancient technique used in shamanic tradition to achieve an altered state of consciousness and explore the spiritual world. Through repetitive, monotonous drumming, the brain is helped to move from ordinary wakefulness to deeper, more dream-like states. This opens the way for personal insights, contact with inner guides or power animals, and can be used for everything from healing to creative exploration.
How to do a drum journey - for beginners
Even though the drum journeys from Sjamanistisk Forbund are not guided, it is easy to get started even if you have no prior experience:
- Find a quiet place
Choose a place where you will not be disturbed. Turn off your phone, dim the lights, and make yourself comfortable.
- Use headphones
To get the full benefit of the binaural sound, it is recommended to use good headphones.
- Set an intention
Before you start, you can think about what you want from the journey: Do you want to find calm? Seek insight? Just explore? A clear intention provides direction, but it is also completely fine to simply be open to the experience.
- Lie or sit comfortably
Close your eyes and relax. Many prefer to sit with a straight back to avoid falling asleep, but the most important thing is that you are comfortable.
- Start the drum journey
Press play on one of the drum journeys. Let the rhythm fill you. Don't try to control the experience - let thoughts and images come and go. Perhaps you will experience visual impressions, feelings, or simply deep calm.
- Finish and integrate
When the drum journey is over, take a few minutes to return to everyday life. Stretch, drink some water, and feel free to write down what you experienced. This helps you integrate the insights from the journey.
Drum journeys in Sámi tradition
In Sámi culture, the drum - the runebomme or goavddis - has been a central tool for the noaidi (the shaman). The drum was used to make contact with the spirit world, for healing, divination, and guidance. The noaidi could use the drum to travel to various spiritual worlds, often visualized as a journey through the symbols painted on the drum. The rhythm was simple and monotonous, designed to induce trance and open the door to the invisible.
Today, drum journeys have become more accessible to everyone, not just to shamans. Modern Sámi and Nordic practitioners often use drum journeys as a collective tool to achieve insight, healing, and community. Research and experience show that rhythmic drumming can provide deep calm, psychological well-being, and a strengthened sense of belonging.
