Hva er en sjamanistisk trommereise ?

A shamanic drum journey is an ancient technique for attaining an altered state of consciousness and exploring the spiritual world. It is documented, among other places, in Sami tradition. This practice is a central part of shamanic tradition and is used for healing, personal growth, and spiritual insight. This is a simple explanation of what a drum journey is.

What is a shamanic drum journey?

A shamanic drum journey involves the use of rhythmic drumming to induce a light trance-like state. This state makes it possible for the participant to "travel" with the free soul to other planes of consciousness, often referred to as the lower, middle, or upper world in shamanic cosmology.

The drum's role

The drum is the primary tool in a shamanic journey. The monotonous, repetitive sound of the drum, usually struck at a tempo of 180-240 beats per minute in core shamanism, helps the participant alter their brainwave activity. This leads to a theta state, which is associated with deep relaxation and increased receptivity to visual and intuitive experiences. In other traditions, the frequency and rhythm may vary more.

Carrying out a drum journey

Preparation: The participant lies or sits comfortably, often with eyes closed.

Intention: A clear intention or question is set for the journey.

Drumming: The shaman or an assistant begins drumming at a steady tempo.

The journey: The participant visualises an entrance to the spiritual world and begins their mental journey.

Recall: After a set period of time (usually 15-30 minutes), the drumming rhythm changes to signal that it is time to return.

Integration: After the journey, the participant often shares their experiences and reflects on their meaning.

Purpose and applications

Shamanic drum journeys can be used for various purposes

Healing of physical or emotional problems

The search for wisdom and guidance

Contact with power animals or spiritual guides

Personal growth and self-development

Problem-solving and creative inspiration

The sound journey, a deeper experience

A sound journey is an expanded form of shamanic journey that incorporates more elements than drumming alone. This practice often goes deeper and can lead to more intense experiences.

Elements of a sound journey:

Primal instruments such as the didgeridoo, jaw harp, or flutes

Use of the voice, including chanting and overtone singing

Various percussion instruments

The sound journey creates a rich soundscape that completely envelops the participant. The varied sounds and vibrations can stimulate different parts of the brain and body, which can potentially lead to deeper trance states and more extensive visionary experiences.

Differences from a traditional drum journey

A more varied and complex sound experience

The potential for deeper trance states

Often a longer duration

Can lead to more intense bodily and emotional experiences

Both drum journeys and sound journeys are powerful tools for inner exploration and spiritual practice. They offer unique ways to connect with the subconscious and the spiritual world, and can be valuable instruments for personal growth and healing.
