Yggdrasil og de ni verdener, en sjamanistisk tilnærming

At the heart of Norse cosmology stands Yggdrasil, the world tree that binds together the nine worlds. This mighty ash tree is not only a symbol of the structure of the universe, but also a living portal to different realms of consciousness and spiritual dimensions. From a shamanic perspective, Yggdrasil and the nine worlds represent a map of consciousness and a path to deeper insight and wisdom.

Yggdrasil, the axis of the universe

Yggdrasil is described in Norse mythology as an enormous ash tree whose branches stretch across the entire universe. The tree connects and sustains the nine worlds, and functions as a cosmic axis, or axis mundi. In shamanic practice, Yggdrasil can be seen as a metaphor for the shaman's ability to journey between different planes of consciousness and dimensions.

The tree's three main roots reach down to three important sources

Urðarbrunnr (Urd's well) - connected to fate and time

Hvergelmir - the source of all rivers

Mímisbrunnr (Mimir's well) - the source of wisdom and knowledge

These sources represent fundamental forces and principles in the universe, and in shamanic practice they can be seen as portals to different forms of insight and power.

The nine worlds

In Norse cosmology the nine worlds are distributed across different levels of Yggdrasil. Each world has its own unique character and represents different aspects of existence. From a shamanic perspective, these worlds can be understood as different states of consciousness or dimensions of reality that the shaman can explore through drum journeys and other techniques.

Asgard - the realm of the gods

Vanaheim - the realm of the Vanir

Alfheim - the realm of the light elves

Midgard - the world of humans

Jotunheim - the realm of the giants

Nidavellir/Svartalfheim - the realm of the dwarves

Muspelheim - the realm of fire

Niflheim - the realm of mist

Helheim - the realm of the dead

Each of these worlds can be explored through shamanic journeys in order to gain specific knowledge and insight.

Parallels to the navagraha of Hinduism

It is interesting to note the similarities between the nine worlds of Norse cosmology and the navagraha - the nine planets of Hindu astrology. In both the Norse and the Hindu tradition, the number nine plays a central role in the understanding of the cosmos.

The navagraha consists of:

Surya (the Sun)

Chandra (the Moon)

Mangala (Mars)

Budha (Mercury)

Brihaspati (Jupiter)

Shukra (Venus)

Shani (Saturn)

Rahu (the Moon's ascending node)

Ketu (the Moon's descending node)

In Hindu astrology these nine celestial bodies are believed to have great influence on people's lives. Just as the nine worlds in the Norse tradition represent different aspects of existence, the navagraha represent different forces and principles that affect human fate and development.

Both the nine worlds and the navagraha can be seen as symbolic representations of different states of consciousness and energies that the shaman can explore and work with.

Shamanic drum journeys to the nine worlds

Shamanic journeying is a powerful technique for entering altered states of consciousness and exploring the spiritual dimensions. By using rhythmic drumming, often around 4-7 beats per second, the shaman can induce a light trance and "journey" to the various worlds in order to gather knowledge and insight.

What follows is a description of how drum journeys to each of the nine worlds can be used to gather specific information and knowledge:

Asgard - the realm of the gods

A drum journey to Asgard can be used to seek wisdom and guidance from the higher powers. Here the shaman can meet gods and goddesses, and receive insight into life's great questions and spiritual truths.

Purpose: To seek divine wisdom, understand cosmic laws, receive spiritual guidance.

Technique: Visualise a rainbow bridge (Bifrost) leading up to a golden hall. Let the rhythm of the drum carry you across the bridge and into the realm of the gods.

Vanaheim - the realm of the Vanir

Vanaheim is the home of fertility gods and forces of nature. A journey here can give insight into the cycles of nature, healing and earthly magic.

Purpose: To learn about nature magic, explore fertility and growth, understand the cycles of life.

Technique: Visualise a lush forest with a hidden portal. Let the rhythm of the drum guide you through the portal and into Vanaheim.

Alfheim - the realm of the light elves

Alfheim is a realm of light and beauty. A journey here can inspire creativity and give insight into the subtle energies that surround us.

Purpose: To develop creative abilities, understand energy work, learn about light and beauty.

Technique: Visualise a glowing path leading into an ethereal world. Follow the rhythm of the drum along the path and into the realm of the light elves.

Midgard - the world of humans

Even though Midgard is our physical world, a shamanic journey here can give deeper insight into human relationships and earthly challenges.

Purpose: To understand interpersonal dynamics, solve everyday problems, find balance in material life.

Technique: Begin by visualising your own body and surroundings. Let the rhythm of the drum carry you deeper into Midgard's hidden dimensions.

Jotunheim - the realm of the giants

Jotunheim represents forces of chaos and primal energies. A journey here can give insight into how to handle and transform challenging energies.

Purpose: To confront fear, understand chaos and order, learn about the transformation of raw energy.

Technique: Visualise a wild and untamed landscape. Let the rhythm of the drum guide you through this landscape and into the realm of the giants.

Nidavellir/Svartalfheim - the realm of the dwarves

This realm is associated with craftsmanship, creative power and the hidden treasures within the earth. A journey here can give insight into how to manifest ideas in the physical world.

Purpose: To develop practical skills, understand the secrets of matter, learn about the transformation of raw materials.

Technique: Visualise a cave or an underground hall. Let the rhythm of the drum lead you deeper and deeper into the realm of the dwarves.

Muspelheim - the realm of fire

Muspelheim is a realm of fire and transformation. A journey here can give insight into purification, passion and spiritual transformation.

Purpose: To understand processes of transformation, cleanse negative energies, kindle inner fire and passion.

Technique: Visualise a portal of flames. Let the rhythm of the drum carry you through the flames and into the realm of fire.

Niflheim - the realm of mist

Niflheim is a realm of mist and mystery. A journey here can give insight into the subconscious, dreams and hidden truths.

Purpose: To explore the subconscious, interpret dreams, uncover hidden knowledge.

Technique: Visualise a thick mist slowly lifting. Let the rhythm of the drum guide you through the mist and into the mysteries of Niflheim.

Helheim - the realm of the dead

Helheim is not only a place for the dead, but also a realm of deep insight and transformation. A journey here can give understanding of the cycles of life and death.

Purpose: To understand the mysteries of life and death, communicate with ancestors, transform old patterns.

Technique: Visualise a deep well or a dark portal. Let the rhythm of the drum carry you downwards and into the depths of Helheim.

Preparation and carrying out drum journeys

To carry out effective drum journeys to the nine worlds, thorough preparation and proper technique are important. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Set a clear intention: Before you begin the journey, be clear about what you are seeking or wish to explore in the specific world you are going to visit.

Create a sacred space: Prepare a calm and safe place for your journey. This can involve cleansing the room with incense, lighting candles or setting up an altar.

Use the right drumming rhythm: A rhythm of 4-7 beats per second is ideal for inducing a light trance. You can use a shamanic drum, a recording or a drumming partner.

Visualise an entrance portal: Many shamans use a specific entrance portal for their journeys, such as a hole in the ground, a hollow tree trunk or a cave.

Be open and receptive: During the journey, let the images and experiences come naturally. Do not try to control or steer the experience too much.

Journal the experience: After the journey, write down or draw what you experienced. This helps you integrate and understand the insights you have received.

Practise regularly: As with all spiritual practice, drum journeys become more effective and deeper with regular practice.

Integrating insights from the nine worlds

After exploring the nine worlds through drum journeys, it is important to integrate the insights and experiences you have gained into your daily life. Here are some ways to do this

Reflection and journaling: Spend time reflecting on your journeys and write down your thoughts and insights.

Creative expression: Express your experiences through art, music or dance to deepen your understanding.

Practical application: Find ways to apply the knowledge you have gained in your daily life and in your relationships.

Further exploration: Use the insights as a springboard for further spiritual exploration and personal growth.

Sharing in community: Share your experiences with other practitioners to gain new perspectives and deeper understanding.

Yggdrasil as a map of consciousness

From a deeper shamanic perspective, Yggdrasil and the nine worlds can be seen as a symbolic map of human consciousness and the potential for spiritual growth. Each world represents different aspects of our psyche and different stages in our spiritual development.

Roots (Niflheim, Muspelheim, Helheim): Represent our deepest instincts, the subconscious and our connection to the cycles of life and death.

Trunk (Midgard, Jotunheim, Svartalfheim): Symbolises our everyday consciousness, our challenges and our ability to manifest in the physical world.

Branches (Asgard, Vanaheim, Alfheim): Represent higher levels of consciousness, spiritual insight and connection to the divine.

By exploring these dimensions through drum journeys, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the universe. We can learn to navigate between different states of consciousness, integrate different aspects of our psyche, and develop our full spiritual potential.

Yggdrasil and the nine worlds offer a rich symbolic landscape for shamanic exploration and personal growth. Through drum journeys we can gain access to deep insights, healing energies and transformative experiences. By integrating the lessons from these journeys into our daily life, we can achieve greater balance, wisdom and connection to the spiritual dimensions of existence.

Shamanic work with Yggdrasil and the nine worlds is not only a path to personal insight and healing, but also a way to restore our connection to nature, the cosmos and the spiritual forces that permeate all life. In a time marked by ecological crisis and spiritual alienation, this practice can offer valuable tools for healing and transformation, both on an individual and a collective level.
